Whether we are at the very beginning of our transition towards an eco-responsible lifestyle, or whether we are quite advanced in the process, it is sometimes difficult to find new actions to take and new habits to adopt. In honor of Earth Month, we wanted to share with you sustainable actions to take on a daily basis, regardless of your background.
We know it: it is more important than ever to pay attention to our Mother Earth. This is the only planet we have, and it is in danger. We believe, however, that if everyone puts a little bit of their own into it as an individual, corporation or government, it is possible to have a positive impact on the environment. We also think that when we get into a greener lifestyle, we instantly have an influence on our loved ones, which can trigger a domino effect and push more people to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle.
The important thing is to go at our own pace and using the resources we have, as we know fully well that there are many circumstances to consider when we want to go green. This is also why we have classified our tips into three levels, "beginner", "intermediate" and "advanced" ... which does not prevent you from dipping into each category! Go ahead, get inspired, and read the entire article to learn everything about our Earth Month contest!
Beginner level sustainable actions
- If your city or town offers recycling and compost collection, be sure to sort your waste and dispose of it properly.
- When you go to a restaurant or cafe, refuse disposable straws. Drink from the container, or, if necessary, bring your own reusable straw.
- Get into the good habit of carrying around a reusable water bottle in order to hydrate yourself during the day ... a gesture that is good for you and for the environment!
- Refuse promotional items and samples to avoid the consumption of disposable packaging and unnecessary plastic.
- Make sure you unsubscribe from any flyers and put a sticker stating so on your mailbox or post office box.
- Donate your undamaged items to charities rather than throwing them away. But beware! Never donate damaged, broken or unusable items to avoid unnecessary clutter in donation centers.
- Likewise, consider trying to find the items you really need second-hand, using your network of friends, visiting donation centers, or browsing platforms such as Marketplace.
- Make the switch to a bamboo toothbrush. When the time comes to change it, remove the hairs with pliers and compost the stick, or use it to identify your plants and seeds!
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
- Minimize washing of your clothes, wash in cold water and dry in the open air or on a line.
- Pack reusable bags in case of spontaneous purchases.
- Have a zero-waste set in your bag or car if you have one, where you will put all your essentials: fruit and vegetable nets, reusable bags, utensils, etc.
- Buy locally, visit your local kiosks and markets, and buy seasonal foods.
- Use sunscreen that is safe for coral reefs and marine life.
Intermediate level eco-friendly habits
- If you get periods, use reusable hygiene products such as cloth sanitary napkins, period underwear, or a cup.
- Replace facial tissues with their cloth version.
- Opt for bulk products and foods.
- Avoid foods that contain palm oil, as this ingredient is fatal for the flora and fauna during its cultivation.
- Try to make your own cosmetics or body care using natural ingredients. The satisfaction of having made something by ourselves is incomparable!
- Borrow items you don't use often (car, tools, outdoor or camping items).
- Repair or have broken items repaired rather than replacing them (find a shoemaker, a seamstress, etc.).
- Reduce your consumption of meats and dairy products. The animal industry is one of the most polluting and environmentally harmful industries.
- Travel on foot if the trip is less than 30 minutes. It's good for the planet and for your health!
- Wrap your gifts with fabric or newspaper or ...
- …offer experiences rather than objects!
Advanced level ecoresponsible actions
- Install a bidet on your toilet bowl and use reusable wipes to dry yourself off.
- Collect excessively worn sheets and towels to create handkerchiefs, napkins and makeup remover pads.
- Cultivate a vegetable garden and make preserves in order to keep your food longer.
- Collect rainwater with a barrel designed for this purpose, and use this water to wash your car, water your plants and garden, flush the toilet, etc.
- Go vegan.
- Learn how to repair and make your own clothes to extend their lifespan and consume less.
- Pick up litter by jogging or walking. This activity, often nicknamed "plogging", combines sport with ecologism and is growing in popularity! Be sure to wear gloves or use a waste collector stick.
- Volunteer for environmental non-profits.
- Help create and maintain a community garden.
At ATTITUDE, it is at the heart of our mission to do our part for the environment as a company. This is why, in collaboration with two non-profit organizations, we have been planting one tree per product sold for almost a year. This is also why we are working to offer more green alternatives, such as our bulk-to-go eco-refills and biodegradable packaging. Our products are also ECOLOGO certified, proving that they have been subjected to rigorous scientific testing and exhaustive verification to ensure that we meet strict environmental performance standards.
